Photographing the aurora is mostly a logistics problem. The light itself does the heavy lifting; your job is to be standing in the right field, at the right latitude, in the right month, with a camera that can hold still for fifteen seconds in air cold enough to crack plastic.

Most aurora guides bury the practical advice under stock photos and astrophysics. This one skips the science lecture. If you're planning a trip to Tromsø, Fairbanks, or the Westfjords in the next twelve months, here's what we'd actually pack and how we'd shoot.

The short version

Go between late September and late March, get at least 65° north, and stay long enough to outlast one cloudy night. Bring a fast wide-angle lens, a camera that handles ISO 3200 cleanly, and, the part most people skimp on, a tripod that won't fail in the cold. When and where to go

The aurora is visible from roughly late August to mid-April, but the practical window is narrower. September and March tend to give you the best balance of dark skies and tolerable weather. December and January have the longest nights but also the worst cloud cover in coastal Norway and Iceland.

For first-timers we'd point to three places: Tromsø in northern Norway (easy flights, lots of tour infrastructure), Fairbanks in interior Alaska (drier, colder, more reliable clear skies), and the area around Abisko in Swedish Lapland (a microclimate that produces clear nights even when surrounding regions are socked in). Iceland is photogenic but the cloud cover is a coin flip, and the auroral oval mostly sits north of the country, you're shooting the southern edge of the show.

Plan a minimum of four nights on the ground. Three nights is a gamble. One trip we'd write off as bad luck; multiple readers have reported flying to Reykjavík for two nights and seeing nothing but rain.

What to look for in gear

  • A lens that opens to f/2.8 or wider. The aurora moves. At f/4 you're forced into longer shutter speeds that smear the curtains into a green wash. A 14, 24mm f/2.8 or a 20mm f/1.8 prime is the sweet spot.
  • A camera with usable ISO 3200, 6400. Any full-frame body from the last six years qualifies. Recent APS-C bodies are fine too; older crop sensors will work but expect to spend more time in noise reduction.
  • A tripod rated for cold. This is the part travelers underestimate. Carbon fiber legs are nicer in the hand at −20°C, but the failure point is the head, cheap ball heads use grease that turns to molasses in the cold and won't lock. Look for a sub-zero operating range in the spec sheet.
  • Spare batteries, kept warm. Lithium-ion loses 30, 50% of its capacity below freezing. Two spares in an inside pocket is the minimum. We've seen brand-new batteries drop to one bar in twenty minutes outside a jacket.
  • An intervalometer or in-camera interval timer. If you want time-lapses (and you will), this is non-negotiable. Most modern bodies have one built in; check before you fly.

Camera settings that actually work

Start here and adjust:

  • Aperture: wide open. f/2.8 if you have it, f/1.8 if you have it and trust your corners.
  • Shutter: 5, 15 seconds. Faster moving auroras need 5, 8 seconds to keep structure. Slow, diffuse glows can take 15, 20.
  • ISO: 1600, 3200 to start. Push to 6400 if the aurora is dim or moving fast.
  • Focus: manual, set to infinity in daylight and tape the ring. Autofocus will hunt and fail in the dark. Live-view zoomed in on a bright star is the backup method.

The single most common mistake is leaving the shutter open too long. A 30-second exposure of a fast aurora produces a green smear with no shape. Trust shorter exposures and higher ISO, you can clean noise, you can't recover lost structure.

Skip "aurora filters", they're solving a problem that doesn't exist for digital cameras. Skip lens warmers unless you're shooting until dawn in extreme humidity; for a typical 2, 3 hour aurora session in dry Arctic air, condensation isn't usually the issue. And skip the tour operator's pitch that you need a specific full-frame body to capture the aurora, any modern interchangeable-lens camera with a fast wide lens will do the job.

Can I photograph the aurora with a phone?

Recent flagship phones (iPhone 14 Pro and newer, Pixel 7 Pro and newer, Galaxy S23 Ultra) can produce a recognizable aurora image in night mode, especially during a strong display. They cannot match a dedicated camera for resolution, dynamic range, or shutter control, and they struggle when the aurora is dim or moving fast. As a backup or a snapshot tool, fine. As your primary capture device on a trip you flew to take, no.

Do I need a full-frame camera?

No. A modern APS-C body with a fast wide lens will produce excellent aurora files. Full-frame gives you about a stop of cleaner high-ISO performance, which is real but not decisive. The lens matters more than the sensor size.

How cold is too cold for camera gear?

Most consumer cameras are rated to 0°C / 32°F but operate fine to about −20°C / −4°F with warm batteries. Below that, expect shorter battery life and slower screen refresh. Should I book a guided aurora tour?

For a first trip, yes, especially in Norway or Iceland, where local guides know which fjord or valley is clear on a given night. By night three or four you'll have the rhythm and can drive yourself.
