Wooden Sign Stencil Tutorial | Silhouette Cameo 3
Silhouette America sent me the Cameo 3 to review and to show you some fun summer projects that can be done easily!
A super easy project tutorial for beginners
I chose this project because I am creating a boyhood nursery for our twins Argon & Aldridge! I wanted to incorporate these little signs over their changing table. I got the inspiration from the brown signs that we often see in parks and other outdoor areas! This project is super easy and only takes about 30 minutes to complete (before drying time.) I think this is also a really great project for parents to start for their children, you could do the cutting and designing and allow them to paint your signs how they’d like!
For this project I used;
- Silhouette Cameo 3
- 2 heavy grain wooden pieces with hanging string already attached
(you could use any kind of wood for this!) - Foam brush
- Acrylic paint
- Silhouette Hook
- Oracle 651 Sheet of Vinyl
(Instead of using stencil paper, I decided to just use a 12×12 of vinyl for several reasons)- It was a bit cheaper than stencil material
- I probably won’t re-use this particular design for a stencil, and
- This was my first project, so I wasn’t 100% sure of myself.
After getting into the project, I did very much enjoy using the vinyl because it stuck to the wood just fine which prevented the stencil to move around. For other surfaces, I probably wouldn’t use sticky vinyl (instead of a stencil and tape) because the vinyl will definitely stick permanently to flat surfaces.
Creating your design
1) Use silhouette studio to create the design, feel free to download the one above, that is the template for the one that I used. Stretch it to the right size and cut!
- How to use Silhouette Studio (skip this part if you already know how to use Silhouette Studio)
- Save the design to your computer
- Click File > Library > Import to Library
Double click the design that you will be using - Size your design to the appropriate size for the board that you will be using
- Click “Trace”
- Select the area of your design
- Choose “Solid Fill”
- Click “Trace”
- Drag original design away from the trace and delete the original design
- Once completed, your screen should only have the red outline, this is where your Silhouette will cut your vinyl.
I used Oracle 651 Vinyl, so on the settings tab, I chose glossy vinyl, the rest populated from there but I did select “cut.” to be sure that the Cameo cut my vinyl. Load your vinyl (with or without a cutting mat.)
Now, you have your stencil!
2) Remove adhesive back using the hook to get started and apply the vinyl to the wood (don’t worry, this won’t be permanent on this type of wood because it’s not smooth)
Time to paint!
3) I wanted a subtle paint look here, so after I dipped my brush into the acrylic paint, I wiped the excess on the side of the paper that I wasn’t using. I then used light strokes so that the wood grain would still show through for that “worn look.”
4) Peel away the vinyl to reveal your new piece of art! I used the hook in one of the ridges where there hadn’t been paint to peel up my vinyl stencil. I only let mine sit for about 1 minute before I peeled, I didn’t know how tough the vinyl would be to pull away, so I didn’t want to wait too long.
I love, love loved this project and will definitely use my Silhouette Cameo 3 for this in the future!
